Kayaking During Red Tide: Is it Safe?

Florida has an unwanted visitor known as red tide who likes to grace our shores every so often. Water sports lovers who are not familiar with this phenomenon often wonder if it safe to still be out on the water. Questions such as is it safe to go kayaking during red tide are back to being heard among veteran and new outdoor sports lovers alike. What is Florida Red Tide?

Specifically in Florida red tide is a harmful algal bloom featuring higher than normal concentrations of alga or plant like organisms. These creatures are usually an integral part of the oceanic ecosystem. Problems arise when they grow out of control and cause health issues to sea creatures and humans alike. Most people associate red tide conditions with a red discoloration of ocean waters but this is often only in extreme cases of red tide. Contrary to popular belief these adverse sea conditions are not caused by human intervention in Florida’s case. The Florida red tide organism, K. brevis, develops 10 to 40 miles offshore and only approaches shore if transported inshore.

Harmful Red Tide Effects

Leisure kayaking during red tide events is safe as long as you careful about your exposure, however fishing for the purpose of consumption is not recommended. Fish and other sea creatures suffer central nervous malfunctions and in extreme cases die in huge numbers due to red tide. When it comes to humans the damaging effects of the brevetoxins released during red tide events can lead to respiratory issues and burning eyes. Besides direct exposure humans that ingest filter feeders, such as oysters and clams that have been exposed to Florida red tide can get sick from Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning.

Staying Safe during Red Tide

Mote & Florida Wildlife Commission report that even swimming during red tide is safe for most people. However if you are particularly sensitive to irritation due to plant products or suffer from a chronic respiratory issue it is recommended that you stay away from the beach during these conditions. Beach sweepers are used to remove any dead fish to speed up the recovery of the waters from red tide. Red tide blooms are usually limited to a specific area so it is recommended that you visit a spate beach that may not be affected by this unusual circumstance.

Fishing has been fantastic these past few weeks both inshore and offshore. With some inconsistent weather still keeping people from getting too far offshore, the reports have been pretty steady. Nearshore fishing the past couple weeks has produced some nice red grouper in about 100-120′, mangrove snapper and yellowtails have been reported consistently in roughly those same depths as well as further inshore in about 40-50′. Cobia have been mentioned primarily being found on nearshore structure as well as a few in the bay this week! There are still quite a few tripletail around as Capt. Brian Marcey and his clients caught a giant last week! Spanish mackerel and bonita have arrived and can be found anywhere from right off the beach to roughly 7 miles out. Big sheepshead and redfish have also been holding on that nearshore structure in about 40′. Snook reports are increasing everyday. With most reports coming from midnight pass, big pass and blackburn point areas, many of the mangrove islands near those spots are holding some as well. The trout and redfish bite this week in the South bay/Vamo has been amazing. Solid reports of big trout and reds mostly being caught on live shrimp or soft plastics such as lil jons, NLBN 3″ paddletails ( great for snook also) and thumpershrimp! Signs of spring are near!! Despite some inconsistent weather these past few weeks, things are starting to shape up nicely both offshore and in. African pompanos are being caught in 100+ feet of water using both live and dead baits on big structures such as D reefs, springs and wrecks. The mangrove snapper bite has been fantastic along with sheepshead, hogfish, porgies, cobia and pompano. There are also still plenty of nice tripletail cruising the crab lines. Always check any floating debris this time of year as they can easily hold a tripletail. Bigger bait is starting to show up which is a nice sign of spring, as well as some decent snook starting to move out. Inshore trout and redfish bite has been phenominal with a lot of overslot trout being reported this week specifically. Redfish reports from the north and south bay have been nonstop with anglers catching them on soft plastics as well as live bait. Now is the time to book if you are interested in tarpon charters for this spring/summer. They’ll be here before we know it!! High winds and cold temps have been keeping people much closer to shore than normal these past few weeks. Offshore reports are scattered in between tough conditions, but nearshore fishing within 15 miles has been very productive when able to get out. Hogfish reports have been strong, mainly nearshore ledges on live shrimp or shrimp rigged on a hogball. Sheepshead and redfish have been all over nearshore structure in about 40′ these past couple weeks as well. A few mentions of tripletail so far with some absolute giants in the mix. Inshore bite has really been great despite the wind and cold. Live shrimp or soft plastics working SLOW on the bottom is the ticket for the cold. Thumpershrimp 3″ gold glitter or rootbeer colors are working great as well as the Vudu shrimp and golden bream lil jons. Think shrimpy patterns! There have been several pompano reports recently on the flats, as well as trout and some nice redfish primarily around docks and rocks. We have live shrimp as well as a full selection of frozen baits. Stop in and see us!

Wintertime fishing is at its best! With some inconsistent weather, the offshore reports have been scattered. The past week has produced some nice numbers though before the wind started to blow. Red snapper, muttons and yellowtails were being reported at about 150′ along with some larger African pompanos. The hogfish bite has been exceptional this past week and should continue on with the colder weather. Most of those being caught with live shrimp or shrimp rigged on a hog ball. Mangrove snappers continue to bite at a range of depths. A long, light leader and live shrimp is the way to go. Gag grouper have been reported like crazy this week as well as a few nice cobia. Inshore redfish bite has been absolutely awesome this past week with some very large trout and sheepshead in the mix. Its time for artificials!! Golden bream, or soft plastics with browns, golds and reds are working best at the moment. Working them slowly over oyster beds and grass flats on the low tides is highly recommended. Fishing Report-Monday March 9, 2026

The weather has been absolutely beautiful and the fishing has been a reflection of just that! Warmer weather and calmer winds have allowed many to get out nearshore and offshore these past couple weeks. Sailfish were reported about 50 mi out last week, big amberjacks and gag grouper on the deeper structure and in about 150′. Big mangrove snapper and porgies have been steadily reported in anywhere between 50′-100′ of water. Cobia, sheepshead and hogfish have been on nearshore structure as well as cobia and sheepshead in the bay. Smaller permit and pompano have been mentioned from the beach this past week, mainly from the south Siesta Key area. Warmer water has been bringing the snook out of the backwater and trout and redfish have been plentiful in the north and south Sarasota Bay. There have been several reports of flounder and mackerel in the bay this week as well. Mangrove snapper near the mouth of Phillippi Creek as well as some larger jack crevalle. The bait is still small but in the coming weeks along with this warming trend we should start to see some bigger baitfish and hopefully a few king fish reports!! Stop in and see us!
