World Ocean Day
Technically, we live on the Gulf, not the ocean — but it’s all connected. That’s why this June 8th, we’re celebrating the Gulf of Mexico on World Ocean Day.
From reducing lawn watering and fertilizer use to joining a local beach cleanup, every small action helps protect the waters we love. Let’s celebrate and help keep our Gulf beautiful for generations to come!
Here are a few simple things you can do on World Ocean Day — and continue doing long after. Start with one small change and build from there. Every effort helps protect our oceans, Gulf waters, rivers, and wildlife for future generations:
Use less fertilizer on lawns and gardens
Pick up trash at the beach, parks, and boat ramps
Reduce single-use plastics like bottles, bags, and straws
Recycle properly and consistently
Use reusable water bottles and shopping bags
Participate in local beach or waterway cleanups
Never dump fishing line or tackle into the water
Choose reef-safe sunscreen products
Conserve water at home
Support local conservation groups and marine programs
Respect wildlife and keep a safe distance from marine animals
Avoid disturbing seagrass beds and shallow habitats while boating or kayaking
Properly maintain boats and motors to prevent leaks and pollution
Dispose of oil, batteries, and chemicals responsibly
Buy sustainable seafood when possible
Educate kids and friends about ocean conservation
Plant native landscaping to reduce runoff into waterways
Use fewer pesticides and harsh chemicals
Volunteer for habitat restoration projects
Report pollution or injured wildlife to local authorities
Join citizen science projects that monitor water quality or wildlife
Support businesses that promote conservation and sustainability
Reduce energy use to help limit climate impacts on oceans
Respect “leave no trace” principles outdoors
Celebrate and appreciate local waterways like the Gulf of Mexico, rivers, bays, and estuaries
