4 Kayak Fishing Tips for Beginners

Kayak Fishing is such a popular sport. The kayaks are becoming increasingly more advanced each time a new one comes out. The fishing gear available today is abundant, and there are so many little gadgets you can add to your yak to make it perfectly suitable for you, the possibilities are endless. Our kayak fishing tips are just a little tidbit of more information to help you get started, or help make this sport a little more productive!

Kayak Fishing Tips for Beginners

  1. Pick your kayak that you’ll be using for kayak fishing. Decide if you’ll use a pedal kayak, or a more traditional one with paddles. A pedal kayak will allow for hands free fishing making it easier. One with paddles will make you need to be accustomed to one handed fishing. You’ll also want a paddle leash so you don’t lose a paddle overboard.
  2. Determine where you’ll be fishing. It’s important that you know your location, not only so you’re familiar with it, but so that you know what conditions will be like and which types of fish are available in the area and are in season.
  3. Learn how to sight fish. Kayak fishing is special because it’s quiet, so you’re not spooking the fish, making sight fishing easier than in a power boat. Just be sure to cast past the fish, and keep the sun in front of you. Also, invest in a good pair of polarized sunglasses.
  4. The closer you stick to the shoreline, the less of the current you’ll feel, making it easier as you start out.

We have a full line of fishing kayaks, as well as plenty of fishing gear to keep you going or to get you started as a beginner. Check out our store in Sarasota, FL or contact us online to see what we have for you.

Exploring the Benefits of Pedal Kayaking

Kayaking has long been revered as a serene and exhilarating way to explore the great outdoors. However, traditional paddle kayaking isn’t the only option for navigating the waterways. Recently, pedal kayaking has surged in popularity, offering enthusiasts a unique and immersive experience on the water. See all the benefits of pedal kayaking and why it’s becoming the preferred choice for adventurers of all levels.

Benefits of Pedal Kayaking

1. Hands-Free Operation

One of the most significant advantages of pedal kayaking is the hands-free operation it provides. Instead of relying solely on paddles, pedal kayaks are equipped with foot-powered propulsion systems, allowing users to navigate the waterways with ease. This hands-free approach not only frees up your hands for other activities, such as fishing or photography, but also reduces fatigue during long excursions.

2. Increased Efficiency and Speed

Pedal kayaks are designed for efficiency, allowing users to cover greater distances with less effort compared to traditional paddle kayaks. By harnessing the power of your legs, pedal kayaking enables smoother and more consistent propulsion, resulting in increased speed and agility on the water. Whether you’re exploring serene lakes or navigating through winding rivers, pedal kayaking offers a swift and efficient means of transportation.

3. Enhanced Maneuverability

Another benefit of pedal kayaking is its enhanced maneuverability, thanks to the intuitive foot-operated steering systems. By simply adjusting the pedals, users can control the direction of the kayak with precision, making it easier to navigate tight spaces, avoid obstacles, and explore hidden coves and channels. This enhanced maneuverability opens up a world of possibilities for adventurous exploration.

4. Comfort and Ergonomics

Pedal kayaks are designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind, providing a more ergonomic seating position compared to traditional paddle kayaks. Many models feature adjustable seats, lumbar support, and ample legroom, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable paddling experience even on extended outings. Additionally, the hands-free operation minimizes strain on the arms and shoulders, reducing the risk of fatigue and discomfort.

5. Accessibility for All

Perhaps one of the most inclusive aspects of pedal kayaking is its accessibility for individuals of all ages and abilities. The hands-free operation and efficient propulsion systems make pedal kayaks suitable for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. Additionally, the stability and ease of control offered by pedal kayaks make them an excellent option for individuals with physical limitations, allowing many to experience the joy of kayaking.

Pedal kayaking offers a bunch of benefits that appeal to both novice and seasoned kayakers alike. From hands-free operation and increased efficiency to enhanced maneuverability and comfort, pedal kayaks provide a unique and immersive experience on the water. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, pedal kayaking offers a thrilling way to explore the natural beauty of Sarasota area waterways. So why wait? Dive into the world of pedal kayaking and embark on your next adventure today!

Fishing Report Thursday, February 22nd 2024

Inshore and nearsore fishing have been the name of the game recently with weather inconsistencies making it tough to get offshore. The nearshore reefs have been very productive on the calmer days with steady reports of mangrove snapper, lane snapper, porgies, and amberjacks. Nearshore ledges have also been producing some decent hogfish these past few weeks. Live shrimp rigged on a 1/4oz or 1oz Hogball depending on depth is the rig of choice. Triple tail reports have dwindled a bit but just inconsistent with the weather. When they’re seeing them, they are eating and they are not small. Inshore pompano reports have been steady as well with most reports coming from the flats and passes. This will also vary depending on water temps. Sheepshead are a best bet!! Constant sheepshead reports with no end in sight! Any structure, docks pilings, rocks, and oyster beds are great spots to look. Live shrimp are suggested along with fiddler crabs. Frozen shrimp works as well but has a tendency to get soft and fall off the hook very quickly. More redfish being reported every day and already a few snook mentioned on the flats! Temperature fluctuation will change things a bit these next few weeks, but bring on the spring fishing!!

Fishing Report! Friday February 16, 2024

Recent offshore action had been extremely dependent on weather recently. Anglers have been able to get out during short weather windows but have done very well considering! A few wahoo reported last week from roughly 85 mi. Big African Pompano were reported in about 200′ of water as well. Red grouper have now been limited to the 20 fathom range but have still been showing very well within that depth. This is the time of year when the nearshore wreck fishing starts to get goooood!!! Big abmerjacks and mangrove snappers. Permit should start showing well here very soon and the cobia have been scattered. There have still been some tripletail reports flowing in, again mostly during the calmer days. Pompano in the passes and scattered on the flats along with sheepshead on most structure have been non stop. Inshore flats fishing is really starting to heat up with a ton of trout this past week and several decent snook reported in the past couple days. Small redfish have been scattered throughout the bay also. Get out and GO FISHING!!

Fishing Report! Tuesday, January 30, 2024

Wintertime fishing is in full swing! Some inconsistent weather has made it difficult to get offshore but there have been a few weather windows making it possible. Anglers getting out to the 130-140′ range of water are seeing some very nice red grouper and yellowtail snapper as well as some large mangrove snapper. If theyve been able to get out a bit further to the 180′-200′ range they are seeing massive African pompano and blackfin tuna as well. Amberjacks are still lurking the nearshore wrecks along with a few smaller cobia. The tripletail have been supersized this season! Some of these coming from 40-50′ of water. Calm days are producing some big ones up to 34″. Pompano have swarmed the passes these past couple weeks with a few nice permit mixed in. Live shrimp are working best. Sheepshead are still extremely prominent in the bay and on most structure..ie. rocks, oyster beds and dock pilings but you may see some on the flats as well. The trout bite also remains strong on the flats with primarily soft plastics. We have seen many smaller reds these past few days on the flats primarily in north Saraota bay. Night fishing has been fantastic lately with anglers catching some jack crevalle and snook in the lights. Tarpon season will be upon us before we know it, now is the time to start getting prepared! We’ve got everything you need to catch the king. Stay tuned for info on upcoming seminars this spring!!

Fishing Report!! Monday March 17, 2025

Fishing has been fantastic these past few weeks both inshore and offshore. With some inconsistent weather still keeping people from getting too far offshore, the reports have been pretty steady. Nearshore fishing the past couple weeks has produced some nice red grouper in about 100-120′, mangrove snapper and yellowtails have been reported consistently in roughly those same depths as well as further inshore in about 40-50′. Cobia have been mentioned primarily being found on nearshore structure as well as a few in the bay this week! There are still quite a few tripletail around as Capt. Brian Marcey and his clients caught a giant last week! Spanish mackerel and bonita have arrived and can be found anywhere from right off the beach to roughly 7 miles out. Big sheepshead and redfish have also been holding on that nearshore structure in about 40′. Snook reports are increasing everyday. With most reports coming from midnight pass, big pass and blackburn point areas, many of the mangrove islands near those spots are holding some as well. The trout and redfish bite this week in the South bay/Vamo  has been amazing. Solid reports of big trout and reds mostly being caught on live shrimp or soft plastics such as lil jons, NLBN 3″ paddletails ( great for snook also) and thumpershrimp! As always, stop in and see us with any questions!
